A collection of poetry written and illustrated by Elise Maren. Estimated availability: Spring 2025. I adopt a pay what you can model. The Periodical is a series of poetry books inspired by an interview with my hero and muse, Dr. Oliver Sacks. Dr. Sacks was an infamous neurologist and writer with a peculiar life; he was filled with childlike wonder about the periodic table. He and his partner Bill Hayes are two of the best writers I have ever read, and I love to read (Check out Insomniac City by Bill Hayes. I cried bittersweet tears four times.) In this interview, Dr. Sacks called himself Xenon because growing up he felt like he could not bond with anyone. However, scientists found out later in his life that Xe and F can bond. That aligned with when he realized he was gay. I was touched by this personification. I thought, "Man, someone should write a book personifying the periodic table. I want to read that...wait I have a chemistry degree!" In the introduction, you'll learn more about why Dr. Sacks is my muse. To put it breifly, please enjoy this cheeky book personifying my favorite section of the table: noble gases and friends. Upon further reflection, Dr. Sacks truly was Xenon; he was noble, inert, and sounded out of this world.
